After two and a half years I have owned a very happy cleaver Shar Pei
that is much loved and wanted. I had always wanted a Shar pei since the age of
13 and when I found out I was allergic to dogs I was gutted that I could never
own one. But after much research and many years later I found out that it was
the under coat that I was allergic to and that Shar pei don’t have one. I did
loads of research on the breed and found out that the more wrinkles they have
the more issues they have and also that they are very stubborn. I found a breeder who was selling puppies and both
mom and dad were not wrinkly, so as I had the pick of the litter the breeder
recommended me one as she was very independent of the other 11 puppies. I took
her home and she went nameless for 6 weeks but it is the best thing I have ever
done. Since then we have done all training under the sun in order to get the
perfect dog and to make sure that she doesn’t fit into the stereotype of the
breed as I know several shar pei have have been put down after 18months for
turing nasty and thought I had a duty to change his stereotype. No such luck,
every trainer we have ever seen still seems to think that she going to bite
which pi**es me right off, but then again they do own collies!
